Here are the lyrics for 'Safe In My Heart', one of my favorite songs from the Kaden Hollow album. You can also listen to the song below.
V1
The Texaco by the old railroad at the station
Was fading in the bright sunlight;
I couldn’t get the red just right.
And all the chew-lip boys on summer vacation
Were leaning on a Rambler’s hood
And cussin’ just because they could.
I saw your long, brush-stroke legs stepping to rhythm;
Something only you could hear,
‘Cause you would never let them near.
And as you passed, you had your head cocked back, you were laughing.
Just before you went inside;
I couldn’t get the colors right.
Ch
Maybe I’m lost, and maybe it’s crazy,
But I’m quite sure I love you.
I’ll hold your heart, safe in my heart,
If you say you want me to.
V2
Foolish clowns had the downtown carnival crowded
Stirring up a frenzied scene,
Making all the children scream.
I looked for you where the chestnut grew through the sidewalk.
You said it was your favorite tree
‘Cause your family sowed that seed.
And you believed in love and pain and resignation,
And you were gonna be someone
And never ever hold your tongue.
I had so much to say to make you understand me.
I was gonna change your mind,
But I couldn’t get the colors right.
Ch
Maybe I’m lost, and maybe it’s crazy,
But I’m quite sure I love you.
I’ll hold your heart, safe in my heart,
If you say you want me to.
Bridge
But if your heart is broken, baby, take mine.
I swear, if you’re drowning, I would give up my life.
If you’re afraid of what’s spoken, let me just try one more time…
Ch
Maybe I’m lost, and maybe it’s crazy,
But I’m quite sure I love you.
I’ll hold your heart, safe in my heart,
Until all of time is through.
lyrics/music by Ryan David Orr
This song is written from the point of view of a shy, timid boy who is in love with a girl. He sees her everywhere and tries to capture her in pictures that he draws. These pictures are sort of both honoring her and an internal, desperate effort to keep her close to him.
The character is very innocent in his approach to her, he is simply awkward and is not good at breaking that barrier between people. So at its essence the song is about a love story and unrequited love. It's also about how people manage their emotions in those types of situations. Not everyone is good at romantically approaching others, and it is an extremely vulnerable place to be.
