This song went through a lot of metamorphoses before becoming what it is now. Now there are two versions - one indie rock version and one soft acoustic version. But it's one of my favorite songs that I've written in this last batch of songs. It is essentially about having your faith and hope challenged, and the harsh reality of the letdowns we face from time to time. It's a very personal song for me and very meaningful in an existential sense...
Cast your jealous stones in the waves,
Cross your heart and hope to die in the big ol' blue.
They're never gonna cry for you.
You are such a fragile fighter underneath
the layer of the hard and thicker skin,
'Cause you're never gonna let them in.
And they grow up how they will - in their own time.
All their lives are not your life.
And you fall at the alter in solemn repose.
You've got both hands folded, and you've got your eyes closed.
And you shout at the indigo of the indifferent sky
and all of the gold light fading over the hillside
as they bring on the night.
Trade a tired man for a thousand lonely years.
I'll be on my best behavior now.
I'm such a mess when I let you down.
No, the empty rooms in the house were not in vain;
you kept your mad resolve in there
and it used up all of the air.
Now the garden can't be saved,
the endless fight, the failing light, and the salted ground.
And you fall at the alter in solemn repose.
You've got both hands folded, and you've got your eyes closed.
And you shout at the indigo of the indifferent sky
and all of the gold light fading over the hillside
as they bring on the night.
